Upsell is generally making an additional offer to the customer who already placed an order or about to do so.

In Internet marketing that most popular form of upsell is an offer on the thank you page after precious transactions is completed.

Generally, any offer after or at the same time of the sale is an upsell. However, there is also a more specific meaning to the word, namely, upsell at the higher price. That is when the prospect bought a product for, say, $27, then upsell offer may be for $97.

That’s different from downsell, when the new item offered has a lesser price, or cross-sell, when the new item is from a different category (e.g. offering hiking gear to a person, who just bought a trail map) or from other vendor (presenting an affiliate offer)
