Pile the Stuff Anti-pattern

Summary:

In a nutshell, "Pile the Stuff" is a sales anti-pattern when "Pile-the-Value" pattern is taken to an extreme and incorrectly.

Name of the pattern:

Pile the Stuff (there are also some less politically correct names for it)

When NOT to use this pattern:

Ever, unless you have some a very special market. Yes, that special meaning of "very special".

How to avoid this anti-pattern:

  • Keep bonuses relevant.
  • Keep bonuses quality.
  • Keep number of bonuses reasonable.
  • Be respectful of your customers time and resources.

Remember, you are not just enticing customers to order, you are endorsing those bonuses. If their quality is not good, your credibility will be hurt. If your bonuses require immediate attention, and your prospect is busy, he will postpone the purchase until he has time (that's "never"). If your bonuses trash his hard drive, he'll remember you each time he has a difficulty finding his own stuff between piles of your bonuses, and that's not the kind of memory you want.
