Partnering with Google

Name of the pattern:

Partnering with Google

Summary:

Partnering with Google is an integration pattern that allows raising profit per lead from Google AdWords to a profitable level. Once that goal is achieved, all you have to do is buy traffic from Google using the profit from the sales you’ve done.

Description:

To apply the Partnering with Google pattern:

  • Buy traffic with AdWords.
  • Set up an AdWord campaign with Conversion Tracker (a Google AdWords feature).
  • Use the pay per conversion model as opposed to pay per click. This way you know the exact cost of your leads.
  • Hint: use conversion optimizer with Google AdWords. You can turn on conversion optimizer once you’ve had 30 conversions in 30 days (see AdWords help for details on this feature). The author of the pattern claims much better results with conversion optimizer than when optimizing manually.
  • Use it for subscriptions to your mailing list (possibly with some sales offer on the landing page as well).
  • Once the lead become a subscriber, continue selling using the maillist. This way you only pay Google for the initial conversion into a subscriber, the rest of the conversions/sales come for free from the mailing list.

When to use this pattern:

When you are in a profitable niche and want to create a reasonably passive income stream. Some supervision is still required.

Benefit: Like with most autopilot businesses, this pattern can generate passive income stream.

Comments:

Be very careful to tune the site / mailing list conversions to profitability first and continue to monitor conversions/profitability. Tune as needed.

Can you use normal pay-per-click instead of pay-per-conversion and Conversion Optimizer? Probably, yes, but many users of Conversion Optimizer reports higher efficiency and lower costs per customer as compared to pay-per-click.

Author of the pattern quote: “And Google… that’s like having the biggest affiliate in the world.”
